Highlights:
Council gained more maturity during his tenure of five long years. Several important developments took place, particularly in the sphere of Government
help and assistance for augmenting engineering exports.
Initiatives were taken to create a Technological, Modern and Cost Effective Production Base.
Special incentives were given to set up manufacturing facilities in backward areas.
Import of technology was liberalised under the Exim Policy of 1985-86.
Government took measures to improve cost competitiveness of the Indian engineering exporters.
Problems like debt problem in African countries, slow recovery of US economy, falling oil prices continued to plague the export performance.
Software engineering gradually started appearing in Council’s initiatives. With the financial assistance from UNDP, Council took up the programme of computerisation of information systems of its offices in India and abroad.
India’s participation in automotive parts and Accessories Show in USA in August 1986.
Sino-Indian cooperation in transfer of Technology in Beijing, China in November 1985.
Indo-Turkish Conference on trade Exchange in Turkey in July 1986.
A Strategy Paper was prepared on Export of Engineering Goods with Short and Long term targets upto 2000.
Warehousing facilities set up at Rotterdam.
Organized integrated programme on Builders Hardware under financial assistance of EEPC in 1989.
The year of 1988-89 witnessed a breakthrough when after remaining stagnant for many years, engineering exports registered a growth of 43.8% due to combined efforts of the industry and Government.
